Cover Letter

http://www.ers.govt.nz/relationships/letters.asp

Set out below are customisable examples of covering letters that employers can use when sending out an offer of employment. The approach an employer should take depends on:
  1. whether there is a relevant collective agreement already in place which covers the type of work the employee will perform, and
  2. whether or not the successful applicant is a member of a union that is a party to that collective agreement.

Letter of Appointment

In the examples below, you can enter information into the spaces provided, then view a printable version of the customised letter or save the letter to your computer.

Example 1: Letter offering employment where there is no relevant collective agreement in place.

Example 2: Letter offering employment where there is a relevant collective agreement and the successful applicant is a member of a union that is a party to that collective agreement.

Example 3: Letter offering employment where there is a relevant collective agreement but the successful applicant is not a member of a union that is a party to that agreement.

How much can i earn?

http://www.picknz.co.nz/info.php?a=4&t=SK

Piece Work

Harvesting e.g. apple picking is usually done on a piece work basis in NZ. This means that you are paid a predefined rate for each bin you fill. The rate is set and usually reflects the difficulty of the work. The more challenging the work, the higher the rate.

Higher piece rates will usually be paid for:
- fruit harvested from larger trees with smaller fruit e.g. apples
- fruit harvested into larger bins which take longer to fill
- lower quality fruit requiring more care in harvesting

Lower piece rates will usually indicate that:
- the crop is easier to harvest and more mature fruit is available
- the fruit is better quality and easier to handle
- the fruit is harvested into smaller bins

The kiwifruit harvest is also usually done on a piece work basis. However, kiwifruit pickers tend to work in groups (gangs) and split the days (or weeks) earnings evenly within the gang.

The advantages of piece work are that, on good picking days, you can make much more than the standard hourly rate - sometimes up to twice or three times as much. You can also work your own hours within reason and you can work at your own pace depending on the amount you wish to earn.

Essentially, the harder you work and the more you pick, the more you will earn on piecework. As a rule of thumb, an average picker can fill three to four bins a day at an average rate of $30 per bin. Good pickers can fill 5-8 bins a day.

However, picking is physically demanding so please be prepared to be fit or get fit fast while on the job! It can also take a few days to get your picking skills and speed up.
Hourly Work

Some work is more usually paid on an hourly basis - including tractor driving, (picking up the bins harvested by the field pickers), quality controlling (ensure the pickers are picking the fruit to the required standard), pack house and processing work - where the fruit is graded and packaged in readiness for exporting.

The benefits of hourly work are:
- a more predictable income
- regular hours of work
- less variance in pay

The main disadvantage of hourly work is that there is no opportunity to make more money by working hard. Average hourly rates for graders and packers in a pack house would be around $10 an hour (before tax).

Opening a Bank Account

http://www.picknz.co.nz/info.php?a=3&t=SK

This can be done at most NZ banks in under 30 minutes. It's best to make an appointment before 12pm or after 2pm to avoid lunchtime queues and ensure staff are available to help you. Take your passport for identification.

If you have an IRD (tax) number, provide this when opening your account. This will ensure that any interest you earn is taxed at a lower rate (19.5%). Interest generated by accounts with no IRD number on file will be taxed at 39%.

Take your pick from thousands of jobs during season: fruit pickers, tractor drivers, forklift operators, thinners, packhouse workers, graders, quality controllers, labellers, truck drivers, go to home page to view jobs available in NZ

Free Stuff Rotorua

Rotorua is famous for its lakes and the opportunities they offer for swimming, fishing, kayaking and other
water sports. Most of the lake park reserve areas have coin operated BBQ areas, for visitors to utilise.

Some of the more popular places during the summer months for swimming are Hannahs Bay on Lake Rotorua, the Blue Lake, the landing at Lake Tarawera and Boyes Beach at Lake Okareka.

On Lake Tarawera there is also a ferry which can take you across to Hot Water Beach. There is a self registration Department of Conservation camping ground on site. Hot water beach is famous, as hot mineral water bubbles up through the earth’s surface on the edge of the cold water lake. Visitors are able to bathe in the hot mineral waters, so you have to take you swimsuit.

Auckland

About Auckland

INTRODUCTION

Auckland HarbourImagine a modern, cosmopolitan city of one million people sprawling over an area twice the size of London. Imagine that this city has a sunny climate with average temperatures of 20°C in summer, 13°C in winter and a moderate 1.2 metre annual rainfall.

Visualise this place built on 50 dormant volcanic cones between two beautiful harbours, where everyone lives within a 30 minute drive of white sand beaches, lush rainforest, over 20 regional parks and a maritime playground embracing 50 islands. This place is Auckland.

Little wonder then that this uniquely exciting twin-harbour city attracts 1.4 million overseas visitors each year and is regarded as having one of the best lifestyles and family environments in the world.

Auckland is the main gateway to New Zealand and our largest city. It actually embraces four cities and three districts in one vast urban sprawl. The cities are Auckland, North Shore, Manukau and Waitakere and the districts are Rodney, Papakura and Franklin.

The best way to view Auckland city is from the Waitemata Harbour. Regular passenger ferries glide across the sparkling waters to Devonport and the Hauraki Gulf islands of Motutapu, Motuihe, Waiheke and Rangitoto. (Rangitoto’s symmetrical volcano is an Auckland icon.) Looking back at the changing skyline of the CBD you will see the dominant spire of the Sky Tower dwarfing high-rise buildings (it’s the highest structure in the Southern Hemisphere). The distinctive ‘coat hanger’ shape of the Harbour Bridge rises solidly in the upper harbour. The Waitemata often presents a brilliant kaleidoscope of movement and form. Brightly-coloured spinnakers billow out from straining stays as hundreds of racing yachts sail on the edge of a stiff breeze and sleek power boats zap out to picturesque island beaches.

Auckland MotorwayAuckland is well named as the ‘City of Sails’ because of its association with round-the-world yacht races and the America’s Cup. Stroll down the main commercial precinct, Queen Street, and enjoy leisurely shopping in intimate arcades and boutique stores spread throughout the Downtown area. Visit the large modern shopping malls in a number of suburban areas. Experience the fine food fare at some of the city’s 800 restaurants, which cover the full spectrum from exotic Asian dishes to distinctive Pacific Rim style cuisine.

Auckland CityFrom Lower Queen Street you soon reach the harbour front. Here you will find the modern, stylish Viaduct Harbour, pulsating with life in the many bars, cafes and restaurants - a happy haven for super yachts from all parts of the globe. In Queen Street and the entertainment district of ‘K.Rd’ you will notice the cosmopolitan nature of Auckland - a cultural mix of European, Polynesian and Asian influences. The city is unique as it has the largest concentration of Polynesian peoples in the world. Early Maori inhabitants knew the Waitemata Harbour as Tamaki Makarau, ‘The Place of a Thousand Lovers’. The area was greatly sought after as a desirable place to live, with every possible amenity. The same is true today, as you will discover during your exploration of the city and environs.

The New Zealand Information Network has prepared this summary to assist visitors to get the most out of their stay in the city. We have focused on aspects such as Places to Stay, Places to Eat, Entertainment, Transportation, Things to Do, Shopping Centres and the Regional Centres.

Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to appreciate the alluring charms of Auckland. Seek out the high places like the Sky Tower and the volcanic summits of Mt Eden and One Tree Hill in order to absorb the breathtaking scenery.

Auckland city makes a great base for exploring North Island scenic highlights such as Cape Reinga, The Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Taupo.

The City of Sails will captivate you and provide many wonderful experiences. Enjoy.

Christchurch

About Christchurch

INTRODUCTION

Cathedral SquareVisitors enjoy Christchurch for its elegant simplicity and gracious lifestyle.

This pleasant ‘Garden City’ has been voted one of the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world. Christchurch has achieved a fine balance between the extremes of modern metro hustle and the grace and charm of an earlier era. The city is an ideal size; large enough to achieve economic viability yet small enough for people to feel they belong.

Christchurch was named by nostalgic settlers after an Oxford university college, and the traditional English ambience can be felt in many ways. Not least of these are the orderly grid pattern of streets and the grand neo-Gothic architecture of the Anglican Cathedral and the Arts Centre. Experience the soothing tranquillity of the Avon River meandering through the city’s heart, and the rich tapestry of cultural pursuits embracing the arts, music and theatre. Recent European and Oriental immigration has created a melting pot of other exotic cultures, reflected in a host of exciting eateries, nightclubs and street entertainment.

Punting on the AvonAs the main gateway to Canterbury and the South Island alpine hinterland, Christchurch has the ability to satisfy the visitor with a broad range of fresh and exciting Kiwi experiences every day. If your taste is for relaxing in a beautiful environment then the tranquil Avon river, tree-lined avenues and leafy glades of Hagley Park are bound to appeal. If you enjoy the fun and excitement of city life this place has full-on festivals of visual and performing arts year round. There is a wealth of cultural centres, theatres, art and craft exhibitions, shopping arcades and quaint boutiques. Vibrant cafes, bars, nightclubs and restaurants offer fine cuisine and award-winning wines. There is regular street entertainment in the form of buskers and an eccentric ‘wizard’ pontificating on a soapbox in Cathedral Square.

The StripWorld-class attractions in the city include New Zealand’s most significant new Art Gallery, fine heritage museums, superb wildlife parks, mountaintop gondola rides, balloon flights, whale watch tours and alpine rail journeys. There is a multitude of adventure and sports activities, including summer swimming and winter skiing all within an hour’s drive of the city.

Downtown Christchurch is extremely visitor-friendly. The compact and orderly layout ensures that you can take in the visitor attractions at a leisurely pace. From central hotels it is easy to walk to most of the main heritage, entertaining and dining venues. The ‘Four Avenues’ area defines the central city precinct bounded by Moorhouse, Fitzgerald, Bealey and Dean avenues and Cathedral Square is the landmark epicentre. From here an historic restored electric tramcar follows a 2.5 km circuit past the major city sights and a shuttle bus operates from the Visitor Information Centre in the square.

The Wizard in the SquareA short stroll or a cycle can take you to a dozen exciting venues - the challenge in Christchurch is to decide what to do first. Between sightseeing jaunts, shopping, pubbing and clubbing there is always the sublime peace of the Avon River to escape to - it is the focal point for relaxation in this city. Peace and serenity can always be found in Hagley Park on the banks of the Avon, especially in spring amidst a yellow carpet of daffodils. You can even sip a glass of Champagne while punting on the river.

Visitors are sure to fall in love with Christchurch city, but beware of falling under the wizard's spell. Once you have experienced everything the city has to offer there are many more surprises further inland. The breathtaking mountain vistas of the Southern Alps, spectacular lakes, rivers and bush clad valleys, giant glaciers descending almost to sea level, precipitous fiords and World Heritage scenic wonders await. Enjoy it all.

Wellington

About Wellington

INTRODUCTION

Wellington CityWellington is New Zealand’s capital city. It is a complete contrast to the sprawling urban mass that constitutes Auckland.

Wellington is a visitor-friendly, upbeat, compact city, which can claim to be the world’s southernmost capital. It offers the visitor far more than a look at New Zealand’s parliamentary democracy in action.

Adopting slogans like ‘Absolutely, Positively Wellington’ the city proudly proclaims itself as confident and progressive. It is also known as the ‘Creative Arts and Cafe Capital of New Zealand’. Here you will find a palpable sense of energy and vibrancy. This is a truly cosmopolitan city firmly established as a go-ahead visitor playground, taking centre stage as the doyen of New Zealand’s heritage, culture and creative arts.

Te Papa MuseumThe city has good reason to promote its physical advantages - a sparkling harbour encompassed by rolling hills, superb native forest and beaches. Wellingtonians are motivated residents with a positive outlook on life. Sure, brisk southerly winds may upturn umbrellas at times, but living on the windswept cusp of Cook Strait instils character and enterprise in its residents and certainly ensures that they enjoy an unpolluted environment.

Wellington has developed four downtown districts each with a very distinctive character. The Lambton Quarter is an intensive shopping scene with elegant department stores, chain stores and boutiques. The Willis Quarter is focused on lifestyle shopping, and it is here that the city and seascapes merge. The Cuba Quarter embraces a funky community spirit with its alternative lifestyle shopping and pavement cafes. The Courtenay Quarter is renowned as Wellington’s entertainment centre, drawing crowds of late night revellers to its lively cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Oriental ParadeAll this diversity is neatly packed within a compact two kilometres of city streets, which stretch south from the railway station to Courtenay Place. The visitor is thus able to indulge in retail therapy, artistic appreciation, scenic vistas, nightclub pleasures and gastronomic delights all within a short walk of downtown hotels. This intimate ‘village’ atmosphere is one of the capital’s most enduring charms. Waterfront rambles and Town- Belt bush walks are also only minutes from the CBD. The airport is a mere 15 minutes drive away.

Queens WharfWellington has a well-earned reputation as an entertainment and cultural centre. You can find some of the New Zealand’s best theatres, galleries, restaurants, bars and cafes here. The choice of authentic ethnic restaurants and cafes is mind-boggling. In fact with around 400 eating establishments, Wellington has a higher concentration than New York on a per capita basis.

The city is home to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, four professional theatres and national opera, drama, dance and musical groups. Museums include the national treasure, Te Papa, a world class interactive museum that epitomises the pioneering spirit and ‘can-do’ attitude of Kiwis. An exciting time to visit Wellington is during February and March when the city hosts three festivals - Fringe Festival, Festival of the Arts and Dragon Boat Festival.

Wellington CityBeyond the city limits, day-trippers can take in an astounding variety of bush and beach scenes. You can seek out remote mountain wilderness areas for hiking, hunting or fishing. Adventure safaris in 4WD vehicles can guide you to rugged coastal seal colonies. Ferries can whisk you away to an island wildlife sanctuary in the inner harbour. North of the city, the Kapiti Coast is a popular recreational playground. Some of New Zealand’s leading vineyards are just over the Rimutaka hill in the Wairarapa district. Wellington is the northern terminal of the Cook Strait interisland ferries. It is also a vital transport hub for airline, rail and road operations between the North and South islands.

TYPES OF JOBS

TYPES OF JOBS

Labouring & Construction

Work can be weather dependent, so there’s always more in the summer periods than the winter. Most of the labouring and construction is in the central cities and if work is outside the city area, the company will usually provide transport to and from each work site.

Hospitality

The hospitality industry is a great place for travellers to get a job. Jobs range from hotel reception to bar work and waiting tables to kitchen work. Jobs in hospitality can generally be found in central cities and towns, which means travellers don't have to travel too far off the beaten track.

Office Work

Short and long-term office work varies enormously. Telesales professionals, bankers, IT support, graphic designers, clerks, accountants and personal assistants can be in huge demand at various times. A lot of travellers prefer this type of work, as it can be very flexible and is generally well paid.

Au Pair Or Nanny Work

Home help and au pair work is also great for those people who have had experience with children. It will give the traveller a chance to experience life as part of a New Zealand family and could even lead to a free holiday away with the family.

Farm Work

Farm work can also be provided if you’d like to experience life on a New Zealand farm. This can either be paid work or volunteer work in return for free lodging and food.

New Zealand

From the Sky Tower Sky Jump in Auckland to punting on the Avon River in Christchurch, New Zealand offers many and varied activities to suit every taste. Those with a passion for the outdoors will be inspired by New Zealand's breathtaking landscape, with sparkling golden beaches, picturesque glaciers and lush native rainforest. New Zealand is renowned worldwide for its pure, natural image which has been passionately protected by New Zealand's Department of Conservation.

New Zealand is a relatively small country with a multicultural population of approximately 3.9 million people. Situated in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean, this unique country has a diverse range of landscapes and climatic conditions extending throughout the two major islands, the North Island and the South Island, and the much smaller Stewart Island. Cook Strait divides the North and South Islands, while Foveaux Strait separates Stewart Island from the South Island. Temperatures range from the warm sub-tropical areas of far north to the cooler climates of the Deep South.

What's a Backpacker?

Backpacking, what is it really?
Backpacking is the name given to a certain type of traveller, but you no longer need a backpack, to be a backpacker.
Backpackers want to experience a country, meet the locals, see new vistas and seek adventure. Backpacking refers to a style of travel. A Backpacker is a traveller, not a tourist.
Backpackers are looking for elements of freedom and independence in their travel. They generally seek to travel longer, but not extravagently. They are willing to be spontaneous and flexible. Backpackers enjoy meeting other people, and interaction with locals and other global travellers is a high priority. There is usually a feeling of confidence and physical ability, but in the end, being a backpacker is more of a mindset.

Energise Yourself

When it comes to conquering fear by pushing the limits, New Zealand has it all. You will leave seeing yourself in a new way, feel more alive after the rush of a bungy jump, or Tandem skydive. "New Zealand - World Capital of Adrenalin Sports".

Explore the forests of NZ
The New Zealander's basic attitude to life in general, combined with the resource of immediate outdoor access and unique insurance laws gives the formula that has allowed these sports to flourish.
Physical interaction with the environment can take on many forms; bungy jumping, diving the Poor Knights, or Rainbow Warrior, climbing or trekking through our many and varied National Parks, over glaciers, white-water rafting, sledging or kayaking waterfalls and rapids, 4-wheel drive or jetboating just describe a few local variations!
Be Ready To Take The Plunge!

New Zealand has become the Adventure Capital of the World, with far more adventure activities than you'd anticipate on offer. You'll soon find out New Zealander's are passionate about you trying one, or all of them!
We feel it's character-building experience to jump off a perfectly good bridge, or out of a perfectly good plane, the higher the better!

Make Friends From All Over The Globe

One of the best things about backpacking is meeting diverse and interesting new people and making new friends. Whether it's a big group of people travelling together in a backpackers bus, pub-partying as they go, or smaller intimate groups kicking back and sitting round a fire in a National Park, the sharing and sense of togetherness is a life changing experience.
You will often team up with people as you go, those going in the same direction or with similar interests. This can save you money as well, as you share costs. Often the people you meet travelling become friends for life.
Research shows that 85% of all Backpackers will engage in a romantic encounter of some sort. If you are suffering from a drought romantically, come to New Zealand and try backpacking - 85% of backpackers can't be wrong!
The other cool thing with backpacking is meeting and interacting with those people who own, or work in hostels. This is just one of many chances you'll get to meet real New Zealanders.

Get Away New Zealand Style

New Zealand is chock full of adventure experiences, and places to just chill out, reflect, and restore. The beautiful natural environment is easily accessible everywhere, even in the large cities. Basically once you leave any urban area you are surrounded by nature at its finest. Even in the busier summer season you can find a long strip of sandy beach for yourself, or a piece of forest that you can call all your own.
Relaxing activities include cycling through the country, horse trekking, bushwalking or sea kayaking through the Bay of Islands, or Abel Tasman National Park, to name but a few. These feelings embody an introspective and calm experience coupled by the surrounding beautiful, natural environment. The experience is best typified by quotes from backpackers themselves ... Kayaking New Zealand
"I just ride my bike and lose myself in the beauty ... forget everything outside of that day."

"We just went all silent, lost in our own thoughts for hours in our kayaks ... thought about life and everything."

Discover New Cultures

Learning is a big part of backpacking. You really get the chance to learn about different cultures and to really understand other people's way of life. Experiences such as a working holiday, or a stay on a Maori marae, will allow you to learn about the "real" New Zealand. It's more than what the average tourist sees, it's meeting New Zealanders. Staying at a Beyond Backpackers allows you to meet kiwis in our bars, as well as getting to know our local staff.
This is great for finding out what we New Zealanders are really like. We like it as well, because we learn from travellers from all over the world, every day! You'll quickly find out why kiwis have the reputation of being the friendliest down-to-earth people on the planet.
