Rotorua is famous for its lakes and the opportunities they offer for swimming, fishing, kayaking and other
water sports. Most of the lake park reserve areas have coin operated BBQ areas, for visitors to utilise.

Some of the more popular places during the summer months for swimming are Hannahs Bay on Lake Rotorua, the Blue Lake, the landing at Lake Tarawera and Boyes Beach at Lake Okareka.

On Lake Tarawera there is also a ferry which can take you across to Hot Water Beach. There is a self registration Department of Conservation camping ground on site. Hot water beach is famous, as hot mineral water bubbles up through the earth’s surface on the edge of the cold water lake. Visitors are able to bathe in the hot mineral waters, so you have to take you swimsuit.
